Volumes contain accounts kept by Samuel G. Barker, receipts, an inventory, certificates, a slave list, a mortgage, notes, and a clipping. Volume 1 contains accounts (1824-1852) with individuals, estates, trust estates, trustees of a marriage settlement, and [South] Mulberry Plantation. Individuals who have accounts with Barker include James Ferguson, Samuel T. Gourdin, Thomas Broughton, James H.B. Malcomson, Elizabeth Gourdin, Ellinor MacBride. Trust accounts include those of Esther Holbrook and Mrs. H.C. Barker, while estate accounts include those of Theodore Gourdin and William N. Mitchell. Accounts of King & Barker are for postage, paper, books, and other items. The volume also contains a list (1840-1848) of properties, rental fees, and notes (1833) concerning rent paid by Barker for his office and dwelling. Volume 2 (1836-1844) contains estate accounts of Elizabeth Gourdin, Peter Gourdin, and Henry L. Barker. Accounts related to estates include those of Peter Gourdin, Theodore Gourdin, Samuel T. Gourdin, Robert M. Gourdin, Elizabeth Gaillard, Henrietta Gaillard, Ellinor MacBride, and Esther Holbrook. An inventory and sales record is for Peter Gourdin's estate. Other items include a mortgage (1836) of seven slaves by Peter G. Gourdin to Samuel G. Barker; a list of 87 slaves, their names, ages, and skills or occupations; notes (1837-1838) taken at sales; notes from a meeting to organize "500 white registered citizens ... to preserve order and to protect the property and lives of citizens white & black;" and a clipping (ca. 1844) concerning legislation related to mortgages and liens.
